- Ciaran Gallagher reports from the DCU Sportsground
UCC HAMMERED DCU-St Patrick’s by a whopping 23 points at the DCU Sportsgrounds in the first round of Sigerson Cup action on Tuesday afternoon.
Spillane brothers Adrian and Killian, sons of Kerry legend Tom, kicked 3-5 between them, while Dingle’s Cathal Bambury contributed five points as the Cork college eased to a handy win.
St Pat’s trailed by 14 points at the break, but the game was over as a contest within 10 minutes of the opening half as UCC took a 1-7 to no score lead.
Galway’s Adrian Varley – who put in a determined display throughout, despite his side’s struggles – finally opened St Pat’s account in the 11th minute, but Spillane bagged a second goal just one minute later.
Dublin stars Ciarán Kilkenny and Cormac Costello helped Pat’s settle in the final 10 minutes of the half to kick three points in that period to leave them trailing by 2-14 to 0-6 at half-time.
The home side’s efforts were mainly thwarted by some extremely loose marking around in defence and middle third and with little good ball heading into their forwards, Pat’s struggled to put any respectability on the scoreline in the second half despite Varley’s efforts.
Killian Spillane finally found the net for UCC’s third goal early on in the second half, while St Finbarr’s Stephen Sherlock capped an impressive substitute cameo with three points in the final quarter.
UCC will now face IT Carlow in the quarter-finals, after the latter enjoyed a 1-8 to 0-9 win over IT Tralee.
